Basketball Hero McCurdy Continues Liberty Hill’s Year-Long Dominance In Spring

Not many schools have produced the athletic success that Liberty Hill has during the 2018-2019 school year. We haven’t even reached May, and the Panthers already have state runner-up finishes in football, boys basketball and girls soccer.

One of the biggest moments of the school year was recorded by senior hooper Parker McCurdy, who made a buzzer-beating three-pointer in the Panthers’ UIL 4A boys basketball state semifinal win against Decatur.

“It’s really awesome to be a part of such an amazing program at Liberty Hill,” said McCurdy. “I’m glad our team and school [have] had such a successful year. It’s also helpful when we have our school and community supporting us every step of the way, and it’s a great feeling to have that behind our backs.”

McCurdy’s impact throughout the basketball season paved the way to 6,495 of the 14,424 total votes in a VYPE Austin Public School Boys Basketball Player of the Year poll win, as well as send 40-year coach Barry Boren to his first UIL state final four.

“The Liberty Hill community did a great job of supporting, as they always do,” he said. “I’m glad I won this honor, and I give all credit to my community, family, and the people around me.”

Along with his all-state basketball achievements, McCurdy has found success on the golf course. He broke on the scene as an all-state golfer in 2018. Then, as a senior, he won the 27-4A individual crown, and helped Liberty Hill grab the team title.

“Me and my golf team have been putting in a lot of practice to prepare for our upcoming regional and state tournament,” he said. “I think we have a really good shot at carrying on Liberty Hill’s success. The team set our standards high, and we have a collective goal at winning the state tournament. As an individual, I’m pushing for myself to do the same.”

McCurdy has opportunities to play both sports in college, but hasn’t committed yet.

“As of now, I plan to continue playing sports in college,” he said. “I haven’t completely decided if it’s going to be basketball or golf, but I am making education my priority when it comes to making my decision.”
