Milano may be a town of 400 citizens, but it’s slowing building a dynasty. Its boys track program grabbed its first UIL state championship in 2018 and added a second in 2019. It led the 2A classification with 62 points on Saturday at The University of Texas at Austin’s Mike A. Myers Stadium, while Holland (42 points) and Shiner (40 points) finished second and third respectively.

Garrett Jones kicked off the day with a win in the 3200 meter run and wrapped it up with a victory in the 1600 meter run. He ran a 9:42.13 time in the first and a 4:25.27 in the second.

“We knew we had a big day,” said Garrett. “Coming into this morning, we had the long jump and the 32. We wanted to get a good start and get a lot of momentum going. We were ready, and we just wanted to get the points up and get on a strong start.”

Devonte Jones didn’t match his teammate’s total victories, but contributed in other ways. His most important performance was the win in the 100 meter dash, but also added a runner-up finish in the long jump, a third-place finish in the 300 meter hurdles, and was a part of the runner-up 4X200 meter relay team with Augustus Downey, Christian Thurman and Alijah Demeritt.

“Man, it’s everything,” Devonte said of finishing another year on top. “Last year was really the jumpstart for us. Winning it last year was the first year in school history, so to do it back-to-back is crazy.”
