In February, Uvalde’s Adelyhda Perez defeated Ashley Cook of Frisco Liberty in the 5A 138-pound UIL Wrestling State Championship, her third career UIL title.

Perez reached the state finals in all four years of her high school career and finished as one of five women wrestlers to ever win three UIL State Championships.

VYPE caught up with Perez to look back on her historic wrestling career, and her dedication to a late friend.

VYPE: Who has been your biggest influence in your sporting life? And Why?

PEREZ: My father John Perez has because he wrestled in high school and the army. He has trained me since I was 4 years old.

VYPE: What has been your greatest HS memory so far?

PEREZ: It would have to be when I was a freshman because that’s the first time I won state plus I proved all those who doubted me wrong.

VYPE: What’s your biggest strength? Or What do You Bring to Your Team?

PEREZ: I never really had a big strength to me but this year one of my friends John Vanmeter was shot and killed which had a big impact on me so all my dedication and my drive pretty much the fire in me was him I won state for him. What I bring to my team is leadership and my wrestling skills I help them with any questions they have about wrestling.

VYPE: What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?

PEREZ: I see myself trying out for the 2020 Olympics hopefully making it, but if not I’m gonna come back harder in 2024 and for sure make the Olympic team and hopefully place top three in the Olympics.

VYPE: What advice would you give a younger athlete starting his/her HS career?

PEREZ: No matter how hard your sport gets or how many times you lose always keep your head up and keep pushing yourself forward. You have to remember that you don’t always have to be the best you just have to be the best that day.

VYPE: What do you do outside of sports?

PEREZ: I like to hang out with my friends and family, maybe go fishing, camping or watch movies.
