The 2019 UIL soccer season ended with a bang. Flower Mound (21-3-1) and San Antonio LEE (26-3-1) battled for 100 minutes in the 6A boys final at Georgetown ISD’s Birkelbach Field before the Jaguars won 1-0 after a 4-1 penalty kick advantage.

“We knew it was going to be a tight game,” said Flower Mound coach David Doyle. “Both defenses are very good [and] both goalkeepers are very good. When it goes to penalties, just go out there and make sure you score yours, and put the pressure on them.”

LEE looked to have an early edge, with its 5-2 shot advantage in the first half, but couldn’t drive the ball past VYPE Player of the Game Landon Leach. The Jaguars’ goalkeeper ended up being the difference because he had three saves in 100 minutes of action, and was a barrier for LEE’s penalty kick attempts.

“Honestly, you always hope it never goes to PKs because it’s just so much pressure, but I felt pretty confident because I had saved one before,” said Leach. “As we went in, the team played really well and they converted the PKs, and it just takes the loaded pressure off of me.”

Flower Mound’s offense was as stagnant as LEE’s throughout regulation and overtime, but attacked Volunteer goalkeeper Joseph Batrouni in the final session. Joe Perryman, Peyton Weeter, Brandon Pozos and Brock Clayton found the net for the Jaguars, while Theo Gunter was the only Volunteer to make one for LEE, so the Jaguars won their first UIL 6A boys soccer state championship.
