Fourteen area teams remain in contention across the three UIL classifications after last week’s Regional Quarterfinal contests. After the dust settled, we saw three of our top-ranked teams go down while the other three remain standing (each classification region had its own ranking).

Let’s look back at what shook down late last week as we gear up for the Regional Semifinals.

6A Region I
The headliner of the week was the showdown between No. 1 Coppell and No. 2 Southlake Carroll. Carroll advances to the semifinals for the fifth time since 2013 after getting the go-ahead goal in overtime on the way to a 3-1 win. Coppell almost pulled off the comeback win but were stuffed with a 1:27 left in regulation thanks to a diving save.

Arlington got its second straight shutout en route to a 1-0 win over San Angelo Central; Richardson Pearce knocked off Mansfield 2-1.

6A Region II
No. 1 Rockwall-Heath and No. 2 Allen had no problems advancing past their respective quarterfinals matches as Rockwall-Heath got its third shutout of these playoffs with a 2-0 win over Wylie. Allen scored five goals again in the playoffs with a 5-0 win over Tyler Lee.

5A Region I
No. 1 Grapevine, looking to get back to the UIL State Finals after coming up just short of a state title, fell to Burleson Centennial 2-1 after holding an early 1-0 lead.

VYPE’s No. 2-ranked Mansfield Legacy breezed by Burleson 3-0 and will meet Aledo in the next round, which scored in the second overtime period to get past El Paso El Dorado 3-2.

5A Region II
Highland Park was able to knock off the defending 5A state champion Frisco Wakeland thanks to a 15-yard strike with 93 seconds remaining in regulation for the 2-1 win. It was a showdown of the state’s past two 5A champions, and a little revenge for Highland Park which loss in the waning seconds of the regional finals last year.

North Forney knocked off top-ranked and previously unbeaten Royse City thanks to a 4-3 shootout win; Frisco Independence needed PKs (2-1) to prevail over Carrollton Creekview.

4A Region I
No. 1 Stephenville put on an offensive clinic en route to a 7-2 win over Kennedale to advance to the semifinals. We highlighted Castleberry’s quarterfinal win on Thursday, a 3-2 shootout over Argyle.

4A Region II
This region saw the top two teams combine to win 15-0. No. 1 Midlothian  Heritage defeated Dallas Hillcrest 9-0 and has won its three playoff games a 21-1; No. 2 Melissa defeated Carrollton Ranchview 6-0, its second consecutive shutout win and has outscored opponents 25-1 in the playoffs.
