Smithson Valley Lacrosse Advances to THSLL Championship

By Michael Brand

For the first time since the Texas High School Lacrosse League changed its Division II state championship format in 2014, a San Antonio team has reached the state semis. Prior to 2014, the best team from Dallas, Houston, Austin, and San Antonio met in the final four. The league then mirrored the Division I format and instituted a super regional format. The amount of teams in the district has since determined how many teams go to the super regionals, and no San Antonio team has made it past the first two rounds. That all changed on Sunday May 5th, as the Smithson Valley Rangers punched their ticket by defeating Pearland out of Houston by a score of 15-10.

The Rangers are led by a huge senior class, which includes several student athletes who are headed off to college to continue their lacrosse careers. Sunday’s game saw several lead changes and a handful of defensive adjustments for both teams. Ultimately, it was the Rangers’ offense who overpowered Pearland to get the victory. Led by junior Ian Feely (3 goals, 3 assists) and sophomore Will Ford (4 goals, 1 assist), the Rangers’ offense spread the scoring with six different players. Defensively, they were led by senior and Rockhurst commit Jacob Cox, and employed several different defensive schemes to stifle the Rail Cats.

The Rangers then beat Klein 11-9 on Saturday May 11th, so they will face Prosper in the Mother’s Day championship match. Sunday’s face-off is scheduled for 11 a.m. in McKinney.
