La Vernia’s Beltran Wraps Up Soccer Career; Heads To TLU For Football

The United States of America may have a different football than other English-speaking countries, but Brian Beltran helped bridge the gap for two of the most prominent sports with that name. During his time at La Vernia High School, he left a legacy for his football and soccer play. The all-state forward’s latest recognition was the 2019 VYPE San Antonio Public School Boys Soccer Player of the Year honor, which followed 69,070 of the 176,574 total votes on the local poll.

“I would never believe that I would get that many votes,” he said. “It’s an honor, and I am truly blessed to have amazing people like that help me win this poll and even hav[e] strangers come up to me [to tell] me congrats. I want to thank everyone who supported this cause.”

While it looks like Beltran’s association football career is over, he’s turning his attention to American football. He signed with a local university to continue his athletic progression.

“I will be attending Texas Lutheran University in the fall to major in criminal justice and continue playing football,” he said. “Even though it’s not soccer, it’s all right because I love them both.”

Beltran’s new home should be a good fit because he’s always competitive, even in his free time.

“I really just like to play sports,” he said. “If it’s not soccer, it’s football or basketball with friends.”

And if Beltran wants to reminisce about his multi-sport days, his old stomping grounds will be a short 19 mile trip from Seguin.

“My favorite moment at La Vernia was probably having the opportunity to play varsity in the sports that I like,” he said.
