Fast Rains’ Start Was Too Much For Hallettsville In 3A Softball Final

Rains softball (34-1) made the most of its opportunities in Thursday’s UIL 3A state championship game, so it beat Hallettsville (37-2) 6-2. VYPE Player of the Game Chanlee Oakes struck out six batters in her complete game pitching performance and recorded a pair of RBIs.

“We just came in thinking we were the best,” said Oakes. “We had a game plan for every hitter and we knew what to expect from all of ’em.”

Elissa Elliott was another notable for the Lady Cats, as she recorded their only hit through five innings. She also drove in Jasmine Mott and Presley McAree on the opening inning play.

The first frame also saw Leo Terry walk, advance to second base on a wild pitch, and steal third. She scored on Oakes’ RBI groundout.

Rains’ next attack came in the sixth, when it recorded its final four hits and final three runs. McAree started the surge with a triple to right center, and scored on Oakes’ second RBI groundout. Two outs later, Sarah Coffman singled to right to score Elliott and Mott.

“I think that it definitely came down to energy,” said Elliott. “Throughout the innings where we didn’t score any, we were trying to stay up as much as possible and play for each other and build on any kind of momentum that we got.”

Hallettsville knew its season was coming to a close, so it extended it in the seventh. Emma Grahmann’s double kicked off the frame and scored on Kadie Zachary’s RBI single. Julie Michalcik followed with a single, and a throwing error on the play allowed Zachary to score. But, Oakes wrapped up her complete game effort with Graci Shimek’s pop-up, Abigail Bludau’s strikeout and Courtney Woytek’s lineout.
