Here comes West Brook

Don’t look now, but there’s a new force brewing in West Beaumont as West Brook baseball is undefeated in District 21-6A.  Overshadowed by perennial powers Deer Park and La Porte, the Bruins are currently 6-0 in district play with season sweeps over Beaumont United and C.E. King.

A big part of West Brooks success in 2019 can be attributed to their eight returning seniors led by all-district players Cole McConnell (OF/P), Harris Downer (OF), Cal Fulton (OF), and Griffith Cansler (OF).

“This group of seniors work very well together,” said West Brook head coach Jacob Walton. “They’ve grown each year together and every year they have gotten smarter on the field.  They work together and understand each other and that definitely helps.”

West Brook will be tested Tuesday as they take on district power La Porte, currently ranked 6th in the Houston wide poll.  The Bulldogs are also undefeated in district play at 5-0.

“You have to bring your ‘A’ game every time out,” said Walton, a 1995 graduate of West Brook. “Deer Park is always strong, North Shore with their 5,000 kids (enrollment) are always there.  Channelview is becoming a very good program. This is probably the strongest this district has ever been.”

Senior pitcher Braeden Bland had a recent no-hitter against Beaumont United bringing extra light to the Bruin pitching staff in general and to Bland specifically.

“Braeden has done a great job for us this year,” said Walton. “This is his first year as a starting pitcher for us, so he has really come in and stepped up his game.  This is his year to prove himself.”

This week could determine the front runner for the district as West Brook and La Porte play a home and home series Tuesday and Friday.
