The Lumberton Raiders bring their best shot Friday as they take on a literally new program in Fulshear.  With an early kick starting at 11am the boys from north Beaumont will have a chance to make their first regional soccer final.

The Fulshear Chargers are in their first playoffs and finished their season at 15-5-4 with a District 23-4A championship.  During the playoffs they are 3-0 and have scored a whopping 23 goals.

Lumberton is coming off back-to-back 5A bi-district playoff losses to Crosby the last two years but have found their groove in 2019 with a move down in classification to 4A.  They have solid wins these playoffs over Carthage (2-1), Madisonville (3-0) and Mexia (2-0).

Is Lumberton a team of destiny?

“We knew we were good coming into this season,” said Lumberton soccer coach Dylan Fairly.

“I don’t think anyone expected us to go this far, except us.  We’re pretty pumped right now.”

Leadership has carried the Raiders in 2019 with a balanced group of seniors leading the charge.

“Our two senior captains this year have have really led the charge,” said Fairly.

“Jaden Rae and Matthew Henry have been unbelievable.  Keeping everyones head in the game, making sure everyones focused during film sessions and practice, they’ve done an outstanding job guiding the team.”

With the Fulshear firepower will need to come defense and solid goaltending from Aaron Turner for Lumberton to advance.  Turner, a 1st Team All-State Goalkeeper from 2018, has been nearly perfect during the playoffs, only giving up one goal to Carthage in the bi-district round.

“He hasn’t missed a beat from last season,” said Fairly.

“He’s been outstanding in goal for us.  He made a great save against Media to keep the game scoreless, he’s always prepared.”

The winner Friday will take on the Palestine/Stafford winner for the regional championship and a trip to the state tournament.
