There was the “Rumble in the Jungle”, the “Thrilla in Minala” and on Friday we get the “Burner at Turner”.  This match is hotter than a Fajita Flamaedo at Taco Rey’s.  Nederland comes into the match off an emotional shootout win vs Friendswood in overtime and Pflugerville is a well oiled machine with dominate wins over Manor (6-1), Tomball (3-0) and Georgetown (3-0).

Both teams come in with only a single loss and are primed for a battle royale.

“Its going to be a great matchup, we’re both similar teams who like to get physical, it’s going to be a ‘knockdown, drag out’ fight,” said Aaron Tomplait, Nederland head soccer coach.

“They’re quick on the wings, they have a great player in (McKenzie) Harvey who gets into space and defensively they have girls with big legs who can get it out.”

Nederland brings it own “X” factor with freshman goalie Morgan McBride who took over the reins starting with the playoffs.  Her big shootout save versus Friendswood was the turning point in the match that propelled Nederland to a 4-1 shootout score.

“Morgan plays above her years in the goal,” said Tomplait, who is in his third year at Nederland.

“It can be nerve racking with a freshman in goal but she’s very confident in what she does.  She knows the right moment to react.”

Playoff experience will come into play as Nederland’s seniors have enjoyed three straight years of post-season play.  Pflugerville brings only a bi-district appearance from last season to the table, their first playoff appearance in over a decade.

However Pflugerville brings a #4 state ranking (Texas Girls Coaches Association) to Turner Field and coach Mike Harvey has brought a championship attitude to the Lady Panthers.  He took over the Pflugerville job in 2015 after coaching Hendrickson to two regional finals during his seven year run there.

The forecast calls for clouds but the field will be smoking come Friday afternoon at Turner Stadium.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1pm.
