Bridge City Baseball to make another playoff run

The Bridge City Cardinals are beginning their annual playoff run in baseball this weekend.  If history is any indication they will be playing at least a few more weeks.  Not since early this century has BC not made it to the third round and this year looks to be another strong season.

“We’ve made it past the second round every year since I’ve been here in 2009,” said BC baseball coach Chad Landry.

Finishing the regular season with the best record in district (22-4A) play Bridge City had to forfeit three victories due to an ineligible player participating.  The crew never lost their edge or their eye on the ultimate prize, a state tournament berth in early June.

“The ineligible issue has zero impact on how we’re going to move forward,” said Landry.

“Our kids have adjusted, we’re going to do what we do, who we play and when we play have no effect on how we will do things.”

The “BC Machine” is a fairly young team this season with only four seniors but are loaded with eight solid juniors, two sophomores, and three freshmen.

Junior Peyton Havard will get the opening game start versus Splendora (10-8-1) with the game two starter yet to be determined.  The series will be best of three with a potential double header Saturday, if necessary, to determine the bi-district champion.

“We schedule extremely touch for our non-district games,” said Landry.

“This gets our guys ready to go, we schedule venues where the environments are tough.  Our home crowds are fairly large so our young players understand the value of these types of games.  We’re ready.”

Splendora comes in as the District 21-4A two seed and are a solid bunch who plays good defense and whose pitchers throw strikes.

“This is not a cake walk for us this first round,” said Landry.

“Splendora is not a usually first round game for us, these guys can play.  We’re looking forward to it and ready to get after it.”

The winner of this series will play the winner of Sweeny vs Scarborough in the area round.
