VYPE 411: An El Paso Basketball Legend – Burges’ Tristen Newton

Tristen Newton can ball. The 6-foot-5 guard finished as the top scorer in Texas, averaging 37.4 points per game, which was also good for sixth in the nation according to MaxPreps.com.

In his senior season, Newton eclipsed 3,000 career points and led Burges to a 29-5 overall record and a perfect 17-0 in District 1-5A.

In November, Burges fell to future 5A State Champion Mansfield Timberview, yet Newton finished with his season-high 50 points.

VYPE caught up with Newton to get to know the best scorer in Texas.

VYPE: Who has been your biggest influence in your sporting life? And Why?

NEWTON: My brother, he has been there throughout the whole process.

VYPE: What has been your greatest HS memory so far?

NEWTON: Going to the elite 8 my sophomore year.

VYPE: What’s your biggest strength? Or What do You Bring to Your Team?

NEWTON: I feel as if my offense is my biggest strength.

VYPE: What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?

NEWTON: Hopefully playing professional basketball.

VYPE: What advice would you give a younger athlete starting his/her HS career?

NEWTON: Keep working hard and always believe in yourself.
