PLAY BALL: Who are the Class 6A state favorites?

Abilene looking good in Region I

The UIL softball tournament starts Friday as state powers get their lineups set and aces rested entering their final run on the season.

The winner must knock off six opponents to hoist the plaque as the state’s top team.

Let’s take a look around the state of Texas.

Class 6A

Region I

Abilene and Keller are the teams to beat. The Lady Eagles of Abilene come from West Texas after reached the regional quarters a year ago. Can the get over the hump and represent Region I?

Not with Keller standing in their way. The Lady Indians have four state titles in the 2000s – most recently in 2017.

Region II

This might be the most difficult region with the likes of Cedar Ridge, Plano West, Klein Collins, The Woodlands and Belton. MacArthur shocked Cedar Ridge a year ago and could face them again if the Gens can knock of Oak Ridge in the first-round. The War Eagles have been a solid program over the years. Klein Collins has been H-Town’s No. 1 for a while and has had a tough district slate to prepare them for this run. Cy Woods and Ranch aren’t slouches either. So many great teams, but only one can advance.

Region III

The top of the bracket boasts Ridge Point, Katy, Alvin and Pearland. One of those squads will reach the Regional Finals. The bottom of the bracket is filled Deer Park, Atascocita and Memorial. It’s pretty open because power Atascocita and Deer Park face each other in Round 1. Both have state titles in the past five years.

So, who is coming out of here? VYPE says Katy, Deer Park or Alvin.

Region IV

No one talks about Region IV, which usually doesn’t put the fear into to the softball landscape, but will this be year? If so, it will be either Buda Hays, Edinburg Vela and Canyon.
