The UIL Class 5A softball tournament will be as competitive as ever over the next several week as teams chase the dreams of winning state.

So, who has a legit shot at taking the gold?

The Region of Death is Region III. Angleton is loaded again, along with Barbers Hill. Friendswood and College Station are also state-ranked going into the postseason. With all this tough-talk about Region III, this grouping has not won a state title in years.

Will this be the year that they bring home the hardware?

Don’t sleep on Magnolia and Willis, who play in Round 1. They can play.

Can you name the last Class 5A team to win state from the Greater Houston-area?

Santa Fe in 2011, who is also in Region III and is pretty salty.

Forney is the defending state champs, while Dripping Springs is another power program coming out of Austin.

How about The Colony? The Cougars won state in 2017 and have that look again as legit contenders.

Out west is El Paso Chapin, who could be a factor in Region I, while down south sits Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Memorial, who will tough in Region IV.
